pancreatic cancer symptoms – Cancer is a devastating diagnosis for humans as well as dogs. But just like the survival rate for human cancer is on the rise, dogs now have a much better chance of living through this terrible disease.

And, just like humans can reduce the risk of developing cancer by doing the “right things”, you can help ensure your dog has the best chances of avoiding cancer.

User Question About pancreatic cancer symptoms :

[random:50]The Press Release
[random]
Pancreatic Cancer — What You Need to Know About Prevention and Treatment

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 7, 2008

Pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, is notoriously difficult to detect.

In addition, mortality is high; only 4% of patients are still alive five years after diagnosis.

Johns Hopkins Health Alerts reported recently on evidence that weight control and exercise may protect against pancreatic cancer.

KNOWN RISK FACTORS

Until recently, smoking cigarettes or cigars was the only known, controllable risk factor for pancreatic cancer. However, recent research indicates that some of the lifestyle measures proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, and rectum may also help prevent pancreatic cancer. These measures are especially important for people with a family history of pancreatic cancer.

SYMPTOMS OF CANCER OF THE PANCREAS

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer don’t usually appear until the tumor obstructs nearby bile ducts, leading to jaundice, or grows large enough to cause abdominal pressure or pain. Other symptoms of pancreatic cancer can include back pain, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and weakness.

Because the pancreas is located deep within the abdomen, tumors cannot usually be palpated (felt upon examination). Furthermore, there are no screening tests to detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages.

Thus, pancreatic cancer is generally detected only after symptoms develop and cancer cells have metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body.

Occasionally, a tumor that develops near the common bile duct causes jaundice, and this allows early diagnosis. However, 90% of all pancreatic cancers are not diagnosed until the tumor has spread beyond the pancreas. Thus, even with surgery to remove the tumor, the prognosis is not good, so taking steps to prevent cancer of the pancreas is crucial.

SYMPTOMS OF PANCREATIC CANCER

Risk factors for developing pancreatic cancer include:

smoking — a two- to threefold increase
age — more than 80% of new cases develop between the ages of 60 and 80
race — pancreatic cancer is more common in blacks than in whites
gender — pancreatic cancer is more common in men
family history — having more than one close relative with pancreatic cancer increases the risk 18-fold
chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), diabetes, and cirrhosis of the liver are also associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, as is a diet high in meats and fried foods.

RESEARCH ON THE CAUSES OF PANCREATIC CANCER

Researchers recently examined data from two large population studies (the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and the Nurses’ Health Study) to learn what physical characteristics and lifestyle factors might influence the development of pancreatic cancer. The studies followed 163,689 men and women for 10 to 20 years. During that time, 350 participants were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

HOW TO MODIFY YOUR RISK FACTORS

Two new modifiable risk factors emerged: excess weight and physical inactivity.

The likelihood of developing pancreatic cancer was 72% higher in participants who were obese (body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher) compared with those who were leaner (BMI of less than 23).

Moderate exercise (walking or hiking for about 1.5 hours per week) was associated with a 50% reduction in pancreatic cancer risk. This benefit, which was noted only in those who were overweight, did not require vigorous activity such as running.

It’s important to note that these studies are retrospective (based on the recollections of participants) and population based (participants were not randomized to different groups). Therefore, they cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

However, since these studies involved large numbers of people and long-term follow-up, the associations are credible and strongly suggest that weight control and exercise may protect against yet another deadly illness.

User Question About pancreatic cancer causes :
I’m not sure where to really post this, but I feel this is the best place to ask. Having recently heard of the death of the actor Patrick Swayze due to pancreatic cancer, it got me to wondering what “causes” it exactly. I know that some people seem to get various cancers for unknown reasons. They don’t smoke, tan, etc. Some seem to just “have the genes for it” and it’s very confusing to understand.

Does anyone know if Patrick smoked/drank or something else that may have attributed to this?

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, but receives extremely little federal funding to support research efforts. Dr. Randy Pausch, the Carnegie Mellon professor who has pancreatic cancer, has joined efforts with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to urge the federal government to provide critical funding to speed the cure for this horrible disease.
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network PSA with Dr. Randy Pausch

Pancreatic Cancer – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Pancreas is responsible for producing insulin which regulates the sugar level in the body. All those who know what diabetes is would know the importance of insulin in body (and hence the importance of pancreas). Pancreas also produces pancreatic juice which helps in digestion of food. When abnormal growth of cells (malignant cells) occurs in the pancreas, it is called pancreatic cancer. Like other types of cancer, pancreatic cancer too is life threatening.

Cause of pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic tumors are caused by damage to genes, but it is not known exactly why this damage happens. Evidence suggests that it is linked to exposure to carcinogens such as; cigarettes, food high in fat and protein and food additives. Possible predisposing factors are chronic pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus and chronic alcohol abuse.

Weight is one of the 4 pancreatic causes that a person can actually do something about. If they do they decrease their risk of developing the disease, since overweight people tend to be more at risk than their thin counterparts. It should be noted that it doesn’t matter how much extra weight a person is carrying. Overweight people and obese people are both equally at risk for getting pancreatic cancer.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer has been referred to as a silent killer mainly because the early stages of pancreatic cancer usually do not cause any symptoms. If a tumor happens to block the common bile duct and prevents the bile from passing into the digestive system, both the skin and whites of the eyes may become jaundiced (yellow), and the urine may change color and become darker.

Again, none of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer are such so as to give confirmatory indications of pancreatic cancer. Pain in the abdomen, tiredness and loss of appetite are said to be symptoms of pancreatic cancer but these can really be caused by so many other things that it might not even occur to you that this could be caused by pancreatic cancer. However, if you are skeptical and want to make sure that everything is ok, you can always consult a qualified doctor to vet out your fears. Jaundice is another symptom of pancreatic cancer but this too can be caused by other things

When it comes to the common symptoms of pancreatic cancer, jaundice is one of the most signature. This occurs due the body’s inability to dispose of bilirubin, which is a byproduct produced by worn-out blood cells. When the body functions normally, bilirubin is disposed of in bile. However, when a person has pancreatic cancer, bile flow gets blocked by the tumors. This results in yellowing of the skin, which is characteristic of jaundice.

Treatment:

Self Treatment: An overall healthy lifestyle with a well balanced diet is essential to maintain general health during the treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Medical Treatment: Although treatment with chemotherapy has not been very encouraging, promising new chemotherapy agents are always being investigated. Combinations of treatment with chemotherapy and radiation therapy may help control symptoms in some cases of advanced cancer. Surgical Treatment: Removal of the tumor offers the only chance for cure of this type of cancer. Unfortunately, only about 15 percent of patients can have their tumor fully removed. The rest of the patients have cancers that have grown too extensive to remove completely.

User Question About pancreatic cancer causes :

what is the story behind that?

[random:50]The Press Release
[random]
Foundation Urges Medicare Officials to Cover Cancer Drugs

Monterey, CA (PRWEB) February 14, 2004

In the interests of cancer patients and oncologists nationwide, the Lorenzen Cancer Foundation (LCF) has joined the public interest law firm Washington Legal Foundation (WLF) and others today in presenting a written comments statement to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requesting an end to the prolonged coverage review of several important cancer treatments. The statement urged CMS officials to reinstate a clear reimbursement policy for off-label use of these drugs.

Once the Food and Drug Administration approves a drug for marketing, physicians may prescribe the drug for purposes other than those that the FDA has given specific indication. Off-label prescribing is common in cancer treatment as drugs often work well for many types of cancer. A General Accounting Office analysis in 1991 demonstrated that over half of cancer patients received at least one off-label medicine in the course of their care.

Despite federal legislation allowing off-label use, in 2002 the CMS began to question the off-label use of a number of the newer and more expensive cancer drugs by placing them on coverage review. These actions, by creating uncertainty about reimbursement, have reduced the use of these medications even when physicians believe that they may be the best option for an individual patient.

One of CMSÂ?s coverage reviews is focused on reimbursement for the drugs ibritumomab tiuxetan (Zevalin) and tositumomab (Bexxar) that are in use in treatment regimens for non-HodgkinÂ?s lymphoma. Another review at issue is focused on the drugs oxaliplatin (Eloxatin) and irinotecan (Camptosar) that are in use in treatment regimens for colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer.

TodayÂ?s statement urges CMS officials to terminate the reviews and to reimburse providers for off-label use of these cancer medications.

Pancreatic Cancer Facts:

· Pancreatic cancer is the most virulent of the major cancers

· Pancreatic cancer research is the least funded of the major cancers

· Pancreatic cancer causes more than 1% of all death in the U.S.

· Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer mortality

The Lorenzen Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against pancreatic cancer. LCF is oriented to increasing awareness and education about pancreatic cancer, helping physicians and patients create optimal treatment strategies, and fostering the development of a molecular or genetic marker to aid in diagnosis.
I am looking for educated, well-intentioned answers. This is a very difficult time for my family and I am not looking for additional gloom and doom…simply straight and honest answers. Thank you!

PrognostiCheck is a scoring system based upon an electrical measurement of cellular architecture of a patient. The study utilizes an electrical illustration of the cell-wall membrane of a phospho-lipid bi-layer cell who’s ability to act as a capacitor and hold the electrical signal is indicative of the health of the patient. It detects the presence and severity of Cancer, the effectiveness of Cancer treatment, the burden of the illness on the individual patient and whether they are recovering.
