pancreatic cancer symptoms – Cancer is a devastating diagnosis for humans as well as dogs. But just like the survival rate for human cancer is on the rise, dogs now have a much better chance of living through this terrible disease.

And, just like humans can reduce the risk of developing cancer by doing the “right things”, you can help ensure your dog has the best chances of avoiding cancer.

“Sorry, your dog has cancer.” Those are words you never want to hear, but they are exactly the words I heard from my dog…Read More

User Question About pancreatic cancer symptoms :

[random:50]The Press Release
[random]
Pancreatic Cancer — What You Need to Know About Prevention and Treatment

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 7, 2008

Pancreatic cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, is notoriously difficult to detect.

In addition, mortality is high; only 4% of patients are still alive five years after diagnosis.

Johns Hopkins Health Alerts reported recently on evidence that weight control and exercise may protect against pancreatic cancer.

KNOWN RISK FACTORS

Until recently, smoking cigarettes or cigars was the only known, controllable risk factor for pancreatic cancer. However, recent research indicates that some of the lifestyle measures proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, and rectum may also help prevent pancreatic cancer. These measures are especially important for people with a family history of pancreatic cancer.

SYMPTOMS OF CANCER OF THE PANCREAS

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer don’t usually appear until the tumor obstructs nearby bile ducts, leading to jaundice, or grows large enough to cause abdominal pressure or pain. Other symptoms of pancreatic cancer can include back pain, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, and weakness.

Because the pancreas is located deep within the abdomen, tumors cannot usually be palpated (felt upon examination). Furthermore, there are no screening tests to detect pancreatic cancer in its early stages.

Thus, pancreatic cancer is generally detected only after symptoms develop and cancer cells have metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body.

Occasionally, a tumor that develops near the common bile duct causes jaundice, and this allows early diagnosis. However, 90% of all pancreatic cancers are not diagnosed until the tumor has spread beyond the pancreas. Thus, even with surgery to remove the tumor, the prognosis is not good, so taking steps to prevent cancer of the pancreas is crucial.

SYMPTOMS OF PANCREATIC CANCER

Risk factors for developing pancreatic cancer include:

smoking — a two- to threefold increase
age — more than 80% of new cases develop between the ages of 60 and 80
race — pancreatic cancer is more common in blacks than in whites
gender — pancreatic cancer is more common in men
family history — having more than one close relative with pancreatic cancer increases the risk 18-fold
chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), diabetes, and cirrhosis of the liver are also associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, as is a diet high in meats and fried foods.

RESEARCH ON THE CAUSES OF PANCREATIC CANCER

Researchers recently examined data from two large population studies (the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and the Nurses’ Health Study) to learn what physical characteristics and lifestyle factors might influence the development of pancreatic cancer. The studies followed 163,689 men and women for 10 to 20 years. During that time, 350 participants were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

HOW TO MODIFY YOUR RISK FACTORS

Two new modifiable risk factors emerged: excess weight and physical inactivity.

The likelihood of developing pancreatic cancer was 72% higher in participants who were obese (body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher) compared with those who were leaner (BMI of less than 23).

Moderate exercise (walking or hiking for about 1.5 hours per week) was associated with a 50% reduction in pancreatic cancer risk. This benefit, which was noted only in those who were overweight, did not require vigorous activity such as running.

It’s important to note that these studies are retrospective (based on the recollections of participants) and population based (participants were not randomized to different groups). Therefore, they cannot prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

However, since these studies involved large numbers of people and long-term follow-up, the associations are credible and strongly suggest that weight control and exercise may protect against yet another deadly illness.

www.socalgastroenterologist.com Information about colon cancer as well as common symptoms. Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. It is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the Western world. Colorectal cancer causes 655000 deaths worldwide per year.[1] Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from adenomatous polyps in the colon. These mushroom-like growths are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy. Therapy is usually through surgery, which in many cases is followed by chemotherapy. Colon cancer often causes no symptoms until it has reached a relatively advanced stage. Thus, many organizations recommend periodic screening for the disease with fecal occult blood testing and colonoscopy. When symptoms do occur, they depend on the site of the lesion. Generally speaking, the nearer the lesion is to the anus, the more bowel symptoms there will be, such as: * Change in bowel habits o change in frequency (constipation and/or diarrhea), o change in the quality of stools o change in consistency of stools * Bloody stools or rectal bleeding * Stools with mucus * Tarry stools (melena) (more likely related to upper gastrointestinal eg stomach or duodenal disease) * Feeling of incomplete defecation (tenesmus) (usually associated with …
Colon cancer symptoms and information

Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer symptoms are sometimes non-specific and varied. Pancreatic cancer is a type of cancer that affects the pancreas. It is a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas. This type of cancer is usually diagnosed in the advanced stages because the patient does not normally show any signs or symptoms in the early stages. Therefore, pancreatic cancer is sometimes labeled a silent killer. Later when the signs and symptoms manifest, they are usually varied and non-specific.

One of the symptoms is, pain in the upper abdomen. This pain normally radiates to the back and is usually relieved when the patient leans forward. Loss of appetite or anorexia, nausea and vomiting are also other pancreatic cancer symptoms. Significant weight loss and painless jaundice are other indicators of the disease. Jaundice is the yellowing of the skin and eyes and may be accompanied by dark urine.

When pancreatic cancer affects the head of the pancreas, it obstructs the common bile duct as it runs through the pancreas. This may lead to pale-colored stool and steatorrhea. Trousseau sign is another symptom associated with pancreatic cancer in which blood clots form spontaneously in the portal blood vessels, the deep veins of the extremities or in the superficial veins anywhere in the body.

Clinical depression has also been included in the pancreatic cancer symptoms. It sometimes happens before the cancer is diagnosed although the mechanism for this association is yet to be known. Surgery is normally used to treat pancreatic cancer. After surgery, chemotherapy removes any remaining cancerous tissue.

The case-control study involved 585 pancreatic cancer cases and 4,779 controls in eight Canadian provinces between 1994 and 1999. The dietary habits were surveyed and analyzed using a multivariate analysis method. Identified and grouped were three dietary patterns, WESTERN characterized by high intake of meat, sugar, and refined grains; FRUIT/VEGETABLES characterized by high intake of fresh fruits and cruciferous vegetables; DRINKER characterized by high intake of liquor, wine and beer.

Symptoms of Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a malignant (cancerous) growth that begins in the tissues of the breast. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow in an uncontrolled way. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can also appear in men. In the U.S., it affects one in eight women.

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women worldwide. For whatever reason, the number of cases has increased in the last 30 years. Ductal carcinoma starts at the cells lining the milk ducts and makes up more than 75% of breast cancer. Lobular carcinoma begins in the milk secreting glands. Many women want to know what the risk factors and symptoms of breast cancer are so they can catch it in the early stages.

Symptoms breast cancer

Early breast cancer usually does not cause pain. In fact, when breast cancer first develops, there may be no symptoms at all. But as the cancer grows, it can cause changes that women should watch for:

A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
A change in the size or shape of the breast.
A discharge from the nipple.

Breast cancers in their early stages are usually painless. Often the first symptom is the discovery of a hard lump. Fifty percent of such masses are found in the upper outer quarter of the breast. The lump may make the affected breast appear elevated or asymmetric. The nipple may be retracted or scaly. Sometimes the skin of the breast is dimpled like the skin of an orange. In some cases there is a bloody or clear discharge from the nipple. Many cancers, however, produce no symptoms and cannot be felt on examination. They can be detected only with a mammogram.

Possible symptoms of breast cancer include:

Discharge from the nipple. This can be dark and bloody or clear in nature.

Itching, burning or scaling nipples.

Persistent pain or tenderness in the breast or underarm area.

dimpling or puckering of the skin – thickening and dimpling skin is sometimes called orange peel

redness, swelling and increased warmth in the affected breast

changes to the nipple – such as a change in shape, crusting, a sore or an ulcer, redness or a nipple that turns in (inverted) when it used to stick out

changes to the skin of the breast – such as dimpling of the skin, unusual redness or other colour changes

Breast Cancer Risk Factors

The likelihood of developing breast cancer greatly increases with age. Most women develop breast cancer after the age of 50. By the time you are 85, you have a one in eight chance of developing the disease. However, women younger than 50 are not immune to developing this type of cancer, as evidenced from such high profile stars developing breast cancer such as Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, and Kylie Minogue. Other known risk factors include:

Smoking with a family history of cancer
Chemical exposure
Alcohol abuse
Breast changes discovered after breast biopsy

Symptoms of Breast Cancer ? Who is at the Risk?

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer in women and the second most common cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. While the majority of new breast cancers are diagnosed as a result of an abnormality seen on a mammogram, a lump or change in consistency of the breast tissue can also be a warning sign of the disease.

There are two main types of breast cancer:

•Ductal carcinoma starts in the tubes (ducts) that move milk from the breast to the nipple. Most breast cancers are of this type.

Lobular carcinoma starts in parts of the breast, called lobules, that produce milk.

Breast Cancer Symptoms

So what are the symptoms of breast cancer? At first, you may notice no symptoms of breast cancer at all. Once the cancer begins to grow, it can be detected in several ways. Check for lumps or thickening near the breast and underarms. A change in the size or shape of your breast may be symptom of breast cancer. If you notice a discharge from you nipple, please consult your physician. This too can by a symptom of breast cancer. Anything else abnormal such as a change in color or feel should be mentioned to your physician. It may not be breast cancer, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

An early diagnosis of breast cancer is associated with a higher survival rate. Therefore, it is vital to be able to recognize the signs of breast cancer. Symptoms of breast cancer can include:

Clear or bloody liquid discharge from nipple

Nipple retraction or indentation

Change in size and shape of breasts

A flattening or indentation on the skin of the breast indicating a change in the underlying tissue.

A change in the look or feel of the skin of the breast, areola or nipple such as warmth, swelling, redness or scaliness

Redness or scaling of the breast’s skin.

Unusual dimpling in the breast.

Discharge from the nipple. This can be dark and bloody or clear in nature.
